European Postal Services Suspend US Shipments Amid Tariff Uncertainty

Date:

Postal services across Europe have suspended most parcel shipments to the United States following uncertainty over new tariffs announced by President Donald Trump. The changes, set to take effect on August 29, will end the tax exemption for packages valued under $800, which previously allowed duty-free entry. Such parcels will now face a 15% tariff, raising concerns for small and medium-sized exporters.

In France, operators said the new rules were confirmed too late, leaving businesses and postal systems with minimal time to adjust. Germany’s postal network also suspended most shipments, citing unanswered questions over tariff collection and customs procedures.

Italy described its suspension as “necessary but temporary,” warning that businesses relying on small shipments to the US would be the most affected. Meanwhile, Belgium joined other countries in halting US-bound parcels, pointing to the lack of clarity on how the tariffs will be implemented.

While gift parcels under €100 and letters will continue to be accepted, officials warned they will undergo stricter checks to ensure they are not used for commercial purposes. Industry representatives say shipments will remain disrupted until Washington provides clear guidance on the new system.
