Russia Defends India’s Military Drills with Belarus, Rejects EU Criticism

Date:

Russia has strongly backed India’s participation in the ongoing Zapad military exercises with Belarus, dismissing Western criticism as politically motivated. Moscow’s foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the European Union and NATO’s concerns were “unfounded” and aimed at pressuring India to reduce its cooperation with Russia.

“When will the West finally understand the futility and indeed, the absurdity of trying to dictate terms to sovereign states?” Zakharova asked, while praising India for maintaining an independent foreign policy. She stressed that the Russia–India partnership is built on mutual respect, equality, and a shared commitment to stability. According to her, military cooperation between the two countries is not directed against any third party but is focused on ensuring national security and safeguarding peace.

The remarks came after the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, warned that India’s oil purchases from Russia and participation in joint drills could complicate efforts to strengthen EU–India relations. She acknowledged, however, that Brussels did not expect New Delhi to completely sever ties with Moscow.

The Zapad drills, involving Russia, Belarus, and several allies, are being held partly near NATO borders and are viewed with caution in Europe. The EU is also negotiating a free trade deal with India, with hopes of reaching an agreement by late 2025.
