“A Moment of True Historic Proportion”: Trump Hails UN Adoption of His Gaza Peace Plan

Date:

President Donald Trump celebrated the UN Security Council’s adoption of his Gaza peace plan on Monday, calling the vote “a moment of true Historic proportion” in a social media post. The US-drafted resolution, which officially endorses Trump’s 20-point plan to end the two-year war, passed the council despite abstentions from permanent members Russia and China. The vote grants international legitimacy to a new transitional authority, the “Board of Peace,” which the resolution states will be chaired by Trump himself.

In his post, Trump promised that “the members of the Board, and many more exciting announcements, will be made in the coming weeks.” This new board is tasked with the monumental job of overseeing the reconstruction and economic recovery of Gaza. The resolution is seen as a critical step in reassuring countries that may consider contributing troops to the second major component of the plan: an authorized international stabilization force (ISF). This force is mandated to ensure Gaza’s complete demilitarization.

The US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, presented the resolution as a transformative new direction for the region. He told the council that the plan “charts a possible pathway for Palestinian self-determination” and a future “where rockets will give way to olive branches.” Waltz emphasized the security aspects, stating that the resolution “dismantles Hamas’ grip” and ensures Gaza can become “prosperous and secure,” free from “terror’s shadow.” This optimism was bolstered by the Palestinian Authority, which issued a statement welcoming the resolution and pledging to help implement it.

However, not all parties shared the celebratory mood. Hamas, the militant group that would be disarmed under the plan, immediately rejected the resolution. In a statement, Hamas called the plan an “international guardianship mechanism” and declared that it “will not disarm,” asserting its actions are “legitimate resistance.” This defiant stance signals a potential future conflict with the new international force.

Furthermore, the abstentions from Russia and China highlight deep skepticism from major world powers. Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya complained that the resolution provides no clear role for the UN, instead giving “complete control” to the US-led Board of Peace and ISF, whose “modalities” are unknown. The plan also faces domestic political hurdles in Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly stated his opposition to the resolution’s reference to a “pathway to… statehood” for the Palestinians, creating a complex diplomatic landscape for Trump’s “historic” plan.
