Administrators Begbies Traynor have taken control of Sheffield Wednesday and are seeking a “swift sale” after owner Dejphon Chansiri placed the club into administration. The move immediately triggers a 12-point deduction, leaving the Owls on -6 points and facing a monumental battle against relegation.
Kris Wigfield, one of the joint-administrators, confirmed they have taken over the running of the club “with immediate effect.” He explained that Chansiri’s decision allows them to “market the club and the stadium as a whole,” which he called “great news for supporters” looking for a new owner.
The administration follows a period of extreme financial instability. The club has failed to pay staff and player wages on time repeatedly and owes an estimated $pounds{}$1 million in taxes to HMRC. This led to an exodus of key players like Danny Röhl over the summer, leaving the club with a threadbare squad.
Manager Henrik Pedersen, who has not spoken to Chansiri, met with the administrators. He remains hopeful that job losses can be avoided and that this marks a “fresh restart.” Despite the 15-point gap to safety, Pedersen insisted, “I have a big belief we can survive in the Championship with this group of players.”
For fans, the news is “bittersweet.” They are “overjoyed” to see the end of the Chansiri regime, which they blame for the club’s plight. After boycotting recent matches, supporters are now expected to return in their thousands for Saturday’s game to provide much-needed income for the “phase of renewal.”
