The significant challenge of Hamas refusing to disarm is casting a long shadow over the Trump-brokered truce, prompting Israel to tighten its grip on Gaza’s future. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Sunday that his government will decide which foreign troops are permitted in a planned international peacekeeping force.
“Israel will determine which forces are unacceptable to us,” Netanyahu stated. He added this stance was “acceptable to the United States,” citing support from its most senior representatives.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in Israel to support the ceasefire, confirmed this alignment. He stated that Gaza’s future governance needs to be determined by Israel and its partners, explicitly “excluding Hamas.” Rubio also confirmed talks are underway for a UN resolution to authorize the force.
The composition of the force is a key sticking point. Netanyahu has signaled opposition to any Turkish involvement due to strained relations. Other nations like Egypt, Indonesia, and Gulf Arab states are being considered as potential contributors.
Meanwhile, the ceasefire itself remains unstable. Israeli forces struck the Nuseirat camp, claiming to target Islamic Jihad militants. Hamas decried the strike as a “clear violation.” The slow return of hostage remains from Hamas has also drawn a public warning from Donald Trump.
