Kremlin Vows to Reassess Peace Talks After Alleged Drone Assault

Date:

President Vladimir Putin informed Donald Trump that Russia would need to reconsider its position in peace negotiations following what Moscow describes as a Ukrainian drone attack on a presidential residence. The Kremlin’s announcement came shortly after Foreign Minister Lavrov publicly accused Ukraine of launching nearly a hundred drones at Putin’s Novgorod estate in late December.

The alleged incident has become a focal point of diplomatic tension, with Russian officials describing it as an egregious act of state terrorism. Lavrov provided specific details about the supposed attack, claiming that 91 long-range drones were deployed over December 28-29 in what he characterized as a reckless operation. He emphasized that Russian air defenses successfully neutralized all threats but warned that retaliation would be forthcoming.

Ukrainian President Zelensky categorically denied Russian claims, calling them complete fabrications designed to provide cover for planned Russian strikes on Ukrainian government buildings. He argued that Moscow was deliberately attempting to undermine diplomatic progress, particularly efforts coordinated with Trump administration officials. Zelensky stressed that Ukraine’s military posture remains defensive and supportive of peace initiatives rather than provocative.

The controversy has introduced uncertainty into already challenging negotiations aimed at ending the conflict. Lavrov stated that while Russia remains willing to engage in diplomatic discussions, the alleged attack would necessarily alter Moscow’s approach and expectations. He confirmed that Russian military planners had prepared response options and identified specific targets for potential strikes.

Zelensky appealed to international observers to recognize Russian tactics and avoid remaining passive. He pointed out that Russia has historically attacked major government facilities in Kyiv, including the Cabinet of Ministers building, suggesting that Moscow’s latest allegations follow an established pattern. The Ukrainian leader emphasized the critical importance of global voices speaking out against what he described as Russian attempts to sabotage peace efforts through manufactured crises and false accusations.
