Preventing a “Mauling”: Europe’s Preemptive Move for Zelenskyy

Date:

Memories of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy receiving a “mauling” during his last Oval Office visit have spurred a preemptive move from his European allies. A high-level delegation has flown to Washington to act as “bodyguards” and prevent a repeat performance as he meets again with Donald Trump.

The primary concern is that Trump will try to bully Zelenskyy into accepting a pro-Russia “peace plan” that involves Ukraine surrendering its territory. The European leaders are there to provide political and moral reinforcement against this immense pressure.

The strategy involves a mix of personalities and approaches tailored to the situation. NATO’s Mark Rutte will employ his well-documented tactic of using flattery to manage Trump’s ego. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will offer visible, personal support to Zelenskyy, drawing on their warm relationship.

Meanwhile, diplomatic heavyweights like French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will argue the strategic case against Trump’s plan. They will contend that a deal forged through coercion would be unstable and ultimately detrimental to the security interests of both Europe and the United States.
