President Donald Trump has warned he could impose tariffs on countries that oppose his push to take control of Greenland, escalating tensions with Denmark and other European allies across the EU.
Speaking at a public event in Washington, Trump said countries that do not “go along” with his Greenland plan could face economic penalties, arguing that the Arctic island is vital to national security. He suggested tariffs could be used as leverage, similar to past threats aimed at European nations over trade and pricing disputes.
The comments come amid heightened diplomatic and military activity involving Denmark, Greenland and Nato allies. Greenland, a largely autonomous territory within the Danish kingdom, has drawn increased geopolitical attention due to its strategic position in the Arctic.
A senior envoy close to Trump said the administration is serious about acquiring the island and believes an agreement “should and will be made.” At the same time, a bipartisan group of American lawmakers travelled to Denmark to meet Danish and Greenlandic leaders in a show of support for Greenland and Denmark.
Denmark has announced new steps to strengthen emergency preparedness in Greenland, stressing the importance of standing together with EU and Nato partners. Greenlandic officials have welcomed Denmark’s support while reiterating that the island’s future should be decided by its people.
Leaders across the EU have pushed back against the idea of a takeover, stressing that Greenland is not an asset but a partner within existing alliances. Nato representatives have also highlighted that Greenland’s defence is a shared responsibility.
While Trump’s team has suggested talks are under way on Greenland’s future, Danish and Greenlandic officials have denied agreeing to any negotiations on a transfer of sovereignty. Instead, discussions have focused on cooperation to address security concerns in the Arctic.
The episode has increased unease across the EU over the use of economic pressure and political rhetoric in relations with long-standing allies.
