The Significance of the UAE’s Reaction to the Israeli Strike

Date:

The reaction of the United Arab Emirates to the Israeli strike in Qatar is one of the most significant developments in the unfolding diplomatic crisis. By summoning the Israeli envoy and condemning Prime Minister Netanyahu’s “hostile” remarks, the UAE has sent a powerful message about the limits of its new partnership with Israel.

This move is significant because the UAE has been the leading Arab state in the normalization process under the Abraham Accords. Its public rebuke carries far more weight than condemnation from Israel’s traditional adversaries. It signals to Israel that its new friendships do not provide it with carte blanche to take military action that destabilizes the Gulf region.

The UAE’s statement that Qatar’s stability is an “inseparable part” of its own security is also crucial. It represents a clear prioritization of Gulf solidarity over its nascent ties with Israel when core regional security interests are at stake. This reaffirms the strength and relevance of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as a security bloc.

As Arab leaders meet in Doha, the UAE’s stance has empowered the collective response and added a layer of complexity for Israel. It demonstrates that the path of regional integration is a two-way street that requires adherence to certain norms of behavior, a lesson Israel is now learning in a very public and diplomatic fashion.
