Portugal Buys Three Frigates from Italy’s Fincantieri in New Deal

Date:

Portugal is set to enhance its naval strength through the acquisition of three Evo-class frigates from the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. This move is part of a broader effort to bolster defense cooperation between Portugal and Italy, two key members of the European Union.

The announcement came following a meeting in Rome between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Portuguese counterpart, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. Prime Minister Meloni expressed her approval of the deal, highlighting it as a testament to the prowess of Italy’s shipbuilding industry. She emphasized that this agreement serves as a significant example of Europe’s commitment to reinforcing its strategic autonomy by investing in its own industrial and technological sectors.

Through this acquisition, Portugal aims to significantly upgrade its naval capabilities, a step that aligns with ongoing efforts across Europe to enhance defense and industrial collaboration. The purchase of these advanced frigates is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Portugal’s maritime defense infrastructure.

The deal underscores a growing trend among European nations to focus on self-reliance for military capabilities, reducing dependency on external suppliers. By investing in domestic technologies, countries like Portugal and Italy are not only boosting their defense readiness but also supporting the growth of their respective industrial bases.

This strategic partnership between Portugal and Italy is reflective of a larger European initiative to foster greater unity and cooperation in defense matters, ensuring that the continent remains prepared to address contemporary security challenges.
