Bulgaria’s newly-elected Prime Minister Roumen Radev announced on May 8 that his administration would focus on curbing rising prices without resorting to price ceilings, opting instead to leverage market economy tools. Radev underscored the importance of legislative adjustments to improve pricing transparency and combat unfair competition, promising stricter penalties and enhanced control mechanisms for those disrupting market norms. He also advocated for cooperative efforts among Bulgarian producers to facilitate their market access and protect them from exploitative practices that threaten industries like dairy and livestock farming.
Following his parliamentary endorsement, Radev convened his Cabinet’s inaugural meeting, outlining priorities that include judicial reform, anti-corruption measures, and securing funds from the Recovery and Resilience Plan. He tasked ministers with swiftly conducting departmental analyses to assess financial health, problematic contracts, and administrative inefficiencies. This comprehensive review aims to inform the drafting of the state budget, addressing hidden deficits and unpaid liabilities that could impact fiscal planning.
Radev emphasized dismantling the oligarchic model, which he believes requires a proactive government to spearhead anti-corruption efforts. He stressed the need for an independent Prosecutor’s Office and a reformed Supreme Judicial Council, with plans underway to select a new Prosecutor General. Judicial reforms are also on the horizon, aimed at enhancing justice accessibility and fairness. On the business front, Radev committed to improving the investment climate, boosting digital services, and reducing regulatory burdens.
In the realm of foreign policy, Radev called for a more constructive approach to uphold Bulgaria’s interests within international alliances. Domestically, he prioritized enhancing educational outcomes to ensure the future success of Bulgaria’s youth, alongside the expedited construction of the National Children’s Hospital to advance healthcare. Social support for vulnerable groups, infrastructure development, and energy independence were also highlighted as key government objectives, with a focus on sustainable resource use and energy reliability.
Radev also expressed a commitment to food security by supporting domestic production and reducing environmental waste. He emphasized the significance of nurturing Bulgarian culture, heritage, and tourism, while advocating for youth sports programs to promote healthy lifestyles. As his government embarks on these initiatives, Radev aims to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship and social solidarity.
