Countries Urged by WHO Chief to Brace for Rising Hantavirus Cases

Date:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for global preparedness as the possibility of more hantavirus cases looms. This comes after a French woman aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship was diagnosed with the virus’s most severe form and placed on a ventilator in Paris. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised Spain for its humane response in accepting the affected cruise ship and urged nations to adhere to WHO guidelines, which recommend a 42-day quarantine and vigilant monitoring of high-risk individuals.

Speaking in Madrid, Tedros emphasized that while there is no current indication of a widespread outbreak, the situation remains fluid due to the virus’s extended incubation period, which could lead to new cases in the upcoming weeks. Health officials in Paris reported that the French patient, a 65-year-old with pre-existing health issues, is receiving intensive care, including artificial lung support and a blood bypass, as her condition is critical.

In Spain, health authorities announced that one of the 14 Spanish nationals evacuated from the MV Hondius and quarantined at a military hospital in Madrid tested positive for hantavirus. The patient, experiencing mild respiratory symptoms and a low-grade fever, is currently stable with no significant clinical decline. The Spanish health ministry confirmed the diagnosis and assured that the patient remains under close observation.

With the first confirmed case of hantavirus on the cruise ship reported on May 2, Tedros highlighted the likelihood of additional cases due to the high level of passenger interaction before preventive measures were implemented. He noted that the initial case emerged on April 6, and the prolonged incubation period of six to eight weeks means more infections may surface from onboard interactions.

As countries take responsibility for their citizens following the ship’s evacuation, Tedros expressed hope that nations would prioritize both patient care and the protection of their populations. He stressed the importance of comprehensive measures to contain the virus and safeguard public health.
