Robert De Niro Thriller Fails to Provide Expected Suspense in ‘The Whisper Man’

Date:

Netflix’s latest thriller, The Whisper Man, delves into the chilling world of a serial killer as it follows a father-son duo entangled in a perilous investigation after a child’s disappearance. The film features Adam Scott as Tom Kennedy, a crime writer and widower who moves back to his childhood town along with his young son, Jake. Their return is shadowed by a string of child abductions, eerily similar to the methods of a notorious killer who is already behind bars.

Playing the role of Pete, Tom’s estranged father and a former detective, is Robert De Niro. Pete had a pivotal role in capturing the now-imprisoned murderer and is forced to revisit his past when Jake vanishes. Michelle Monaghan adds to the cast as Detective Amanda, who joins forces with Pete and Tom to unravel the mystery.

Adapted from Alex North’s 2019 novel, The Whisper Man weaves together elements typical of the thriller genre, such as missing children, serial killers, and cryptic clues, all underscored by psychological tension. Despite these engaging components, the film’s predictable plot and standard twists hinder its ability to generate genuine suspense.

De Niro’s performance is subdued and somewhat detached, while Scott faces challenges in convincingly portraying Tom’s emotional struggles. The movie’s dark visual aesthetic coupled with its inconsistent pacing further diminishes its overall impact.

In its final act, The Whisper Man attempts to ramp up the intensity through a series of confrontations and revelations. However, the action feels lackluster, and the conclusion does not offer a satisfying resolution. Ultimately, the film presents a familiar tale within the serial-killer mystery genre, yet fails to set itself apart from its contemporaries.
