Experts Urge Consumers: Scrutinize Labels, ‘Sugar-Free’ Isn’t Always Healthy!

Date:

Many consumers opt for sugar-free products under the assumption that they are healthier or better for weight management. However, nutrition experts caution that the “sugar-free” label merely denotes the absence of added sugars and does not necessarily indicate a product is low in calories, nutritious, or beneficial for blood sugar control.

Experts point out that certain sugar-free foods might still contain ingredients like maltodextrin, dextrose, or fruit juice concentrates—elements that can affect blood sugar levels. Moreover, products marked as having “no added sugar” could still include naturally occurring sugars from components such as fruits or milk.

There is also concern about processed sugar-free snacks, biscuits, and breakfast cereals, which are often made with refined flour and starches. These carbohydrates are rapidly converted into glucose once ingested, potentially causing blood sugar spikes and offering limited fiber and nutritional benefits.

Rather than relying on packaging claims, experts advise consumers to thoroughly read nutrition labels. Evaluating the total carbohydrate content, fiber, protein, serving size, and ingredient list provides a more accurate assessment of a product’s nutritional value.

For a healthier lifestyle and effective weight management, nutrition specialists advocate for the consumption of minimally processed foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and lean proteins. These foods are naturally high in nutrients, fiber, and protein, which help promote satiety and support a healthy metabolism. Ultimately, experts stress that maintaining a balanced diet and making informed food choices are more effective strategies than simply opting for sugar-free labeled products.
