Spain Allows Citizens of Eight African Nations Visa-Free Entry

Date:

In a significant policy shift beginning in 2026, Spain will allow visa-free travel for citizens holding ordinary passports from eight African nations. Travelers from Botswana, Cabo Verde, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda, and Seychelles will be eligible for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This move aims to enhance tourism, promote business travel, and foster cultural exchanges between Africa and Europe.

The visa exemption is designated for short-term visits, specifically for tourism, business purposes, or visiting family and friends. Despite this relaxed entry requirement, travelers must adhere to standard entry conditions. These include possessing a valid passport and, if necessary, providing evidence of accommodation, sufficient financial resources, and proof of return or onward travel arrangements.

However, the exemption is limited to non-employment purposes. Those wishing to work, undertake long-term studies, or relocate permanently to Spain will still need to secure the relevant visa or residence permit. The policy is structured to facilitate easier access for short-term visits while maintaining the immigration controls necessary for longer stays.

Notably absent from this list is South Africa, which means its citizens will continue to require a Schengen visa for short-term visits to Spain and most other countries within the Schengen Area. This decision underscores the nuanced approach taken by Spain in determining which countries are included in the new visa-free arrangement.
