EU Faces Daily €1 Billion Trade Deficit with China

Date:

The European Union’s trade deficit with China surged to €36.5 billion in July 2026, marking a significant imbalance as the EU imported nearly three times more goods from China than it exported, according to Eurostat data. This growing deficit underscores the ongoing challenge for the EU as it seeks to recalibrate its economic relationship with China.

In July, EU imports from China increased by 8% year-on-year to reach €53.9 billion. In contrast, exports from the EU to China decreased by 1.6% to €17.4 billion. This disparity expanded the trade deficit from €32.3 billion recorded in the same month the previous year. Over the first seven months of 2026, the EU’s trade deficit with China amounted to approximately €234 billion, highlighting a sustained trend of trade imbalance.

The increasing trade gap has prompted EU officials to consider measures aimed at achieving greater balance. Discussions are underway to target specific sectors, notably hybrid vehicles and chemicals, where import restrictions or regulatory changes could be implemented. Since the EU imposed additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024, imports of hybrid vehicles from China have risen sharply, indicating a shift in trade patterns that EU policymakers are keen to address.

As part of these efforts, European officials are exploring voluntary limits on Chinese exports of hybrid vehicles. Such measures are intended to mitigate trade tensions and support the EU’s strategic goal of reducing dependency on Chinese goods, particularly in key sectors.

Trade relations with China remain a critical issue on the EU’s agenda, with upcoming discussions between Brussels and Beijing expected to focus on increasing European exports. The EU’s strategy aims to lessen reliance on Chinese imports, fostering a more balanced trade environment.
