US, Saudi Arabia Conduct Joint Attacks on Iran-Backed Militias in Iraq

Date:

In a coordinated military action, the United States and Saudi Arabia launched strikes against Iran-backed militia positions in Iraq, following a series of regional attacks that have escalated tensions in the Middle East. The US military reported that Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at American forces were intercepted, averting damage to a US base in Jordan. In response, Washington has cautioned that further attacks on US personnel or Saudi energy infrastructure would provoke additional military measures.

The joint operations specifically targeted sites associated with Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), resulting in the deaths of at least 20 militia members and injuring several others, according to officials. This retaliatory move underscores the heightened volatility in the region and the potential for further conflict.

Compounding the situation, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced they had intercepted three oil tankers in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, accusing the vessels of breaching Iranian regulations. This incident has sparked concerns about global energy supply security, contributing to a rise in Brent crude oil prices.

The current hostilities mark a resurgence of conflict following a brief cessation, intensifying uncertainties about regional stability. As part of the broader conflict, Iraq has initiated an investigation into recent drone attacks, while Iranian-backed armed groups have denied any involvement. These developments highlight the increasing security challenges threatening the Gulf and vital international shipping lanes.
