Rubio Confirms No Tolls for Strait of Hormuz During US-Iran Talks

Date:

In a bid to reassure Gulf allies, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has pledged that the Strait of Hormuz will remain open for free international shipping, explicitly stating that Iran or any other nation will not be permitted to levy tolls or fees on this critical maritime passage. His visit to the Gulf region, where he is engaging with officials from the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain, seeks to bolster confidence among US allies following a recent ceasefire agreement between the United States and Tehran.

Rubio emphasized that the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is protected under international law, addressing a significant concern for Gulf countries, which worry about Iran’s potential increase in influence once it gains access to previously frozen funds. The ceasefire arrangement includes a 60-day period of unrestricted passage through the waterway, with further discussions anticipated regarding the future management of maritime activities between Iran and neighboring countries.

Gulf nations are also pursuing assurances that any financial relief given to Iran will not be directed towards enhancing its military capabilities. Despite these concerns, Iran has dismissed the idea of incorporating its ballistic missile program into upcoming negotiations, asserting that the program is vital for its national defense. This topic remains a contentious point as tensions persist in the region.

The discussions occur amidst ongoing regional tensions related to nuclear monitoring, sanctions relief, and broader security issues. Rubio reiterated the United States’ commitment to protecting its allies and ensuring stability in the Gulf. These assurances are particularly significant given the fragile security environment and the complex dynamics at play in the region.
