Spain is bracing for another intense wave of extreme heat, as temperatures are predicted to soar above 40°C in multiple regions across the country. The national weather authority has issued extended orange heat alerts through Friday, with the mercury expected to hit 42°C in Madrid and some parts of the south. The most severe heat is anticipated in the inland areas of Andalusia, where temperatures could rise to between 42°C and 43°C.
Among the areas set to face the brunt of the heat are Córdoba and Sevilla. Córdoba is forecasted to reach about 43°C on Thursday, while Friday will see temperatures hovering near 40°C. Much of this province remains under a yellow heat warning, with these unseasonably high temperatures likely to persist into the start of next week. In Sevilla, particularly in the Campiña Sevillana, an orange warning is in place as temperatures are projected to surge to 41°C during the afternoon and evening hours.
The scorching conditions are expected to extend across various parts of Spain. Regions such as Badajoz, Cáceres, Córdoba, Sevilla, Granada, Jaén, Zaragoza, Lleida, Logroño, and Toledo are all expected to experience temperatures reaching or exceeding 40°C. Additionally, large portions of mainland Spain will likely see temperatures above 34°C, while Mallorca could hit highs over 35°C. The heat will also bring warm nights across southern Spain, the Mediterranean coast, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands, with minimum temperatures possibly around 25°C in some locales.
This heatwave is driven by a particularly warm air mass affecting mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. The oppressive heat is also raising the risk of wildfires, with some regions facing potentially severe fire hazards. Although a slight dip in temperatures might occur in certain areas after Friday, the exceptionally hot conditions are expected to linger through the weekend. Meanwhile, northern coastal regions are likely to experience significantly cooler climates, with temperatures predominantly in the mid-20s.
