Bulgaria, Romania, Türkiye to Boost Black Sea Security Under NATO Plan

Date:

Bulgaria, Romania, and Türkiye are set to enhance their security operations in the Black Sea as part of the NATO Mine Countermeasures Group, focusing on the protection of critical underwater infrastructure. The initiative, announced by Bulgarian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Kiril Mihailov on October 20, aims to extend current operations beyond detecting and neutralizing sea mines and drones to include the safeguarding of crucial underwater assets.

The expanded mission, which awaits ratification by the Turkish Parliament, will see the three countries identifying infrastructure deemed vital to national and regional security. This includes gas and oil pipelines, internet and fibre-optic cables, and electricity connections traversing the Black Sea. This move comes amid heightened regional tensions, particularly following the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Rear Admiral Mihailov highlighted that the Bulgarian Navy, since the conflict began, has actively engaged in operations to secure its maritime territories, having destroyed six floating mines and identified over 100 drones, 35 of which posed significant threats and were neutralized. The Bulgarian armed forces, alongside international partners, are maintaining a vigilant watch over territorial waters, with the navy playing a central role.

In addition to national efforts, the operations involve collaboration with neighboring Black Sea countries and international allies, including the involvement of a US maritime patrol aircraft in monitoring activities. The goal of the expanded operations is not only to safeguard underwater infrastructure but also to bolster maritime security and improve coordination among NATO members in the region.

This strategic enhancement of Black Sea security efforts underscores the ongoing commitment of Bulgaria, Romania, and Türkiye to counter regional threats and to ensure the safety and security of vital infrastructure under NATO’s collaborative framework.
