Russia has ramped up its offensive against Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, resulting in the deaths of six railway workers following a series of missile strikes. These attacks form part of Moscow’s ongoing assault on Kyiv and vital infrastructure across Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s state railway operator, the employees were killed when a ballistic missile hit a locomotive depot, with other facilities also suffering damage during this extensive attack on the capital and its surrounding areas. In the broader bombardment, at least 12 people lost their lives, including children, while several more were injured.
This latest wave of strikes marks a significant escalation in Russia’s efforts to cripple Ukraine’s railway network, a crucial component of the nation’s wartime operations. The railway system has been essential for transporting civilians, supplies, and military equipment, making it a lifeline for the country. Since the full-scale invasion commenced, 58 railway employees have been killed, and more than 300 have been injured. The network has sustained substantial damage, with hundreds of locomotives and carriages impacted.
The frequency of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s railway infrastructure has surged this year. Ukrainian authorities report that the railway network has been targeted over 1,500 times, already surpassing the total number of attacks recorded in the previous year. The nature of these attacks has also evolved, shifting from strikes on bridges and tracks to direct hits on locomotives, depots, and electrical infrastructure. This strategy is particularly damaging as Russia increasingly employs drones and missiles against railway facilities, while Ukraine struggles with shortages of air-defense systems.
These strikes are causing significant disruptions to passenger services. Trains, once known for their punctuality, now frequently face delays as passengers and railway staff are compelled to seek shelter during air-raid alerts, with some delays extending for hours. Ukraine’s railway system, spanning approximately 24,000 kilometers, remains vital to the nation’s economy and wartime logistics. Continued attacks threaten to further impede industrial activity, exports, and the movement of people and goods. Ukraine is urging its Western allies to supply additional air-defense systems to protect its railway infrastructure from Russian missiles and drones.
The recent attacks coincide with a broader intensification of Russian drone strikes. Ukrainian officials report that Russia has launched over 1,500 drones in recent assaults, including newer, jet-powered models that are harder to intercept. With the frequency of attacks increasing, Ukraine faces mounting pressure to defend its railway network, which is crucial to both its civilian population and military efforts.
