South Korea Demands Apology from Ukraine Over North Korean Soldiers Dispute

Date:

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has issued a warning to Ukraine regarding potential further actions unless the Ukrainian government acknowledges an alleged confidentiality agreement over the handling of two North Korean soldiers. These soldiers were captured by Ukrainian forces while allegedly fighting for Russia and later transferred to South Korea.

The controversy arose after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly announced the transfer of the North Korean soldiers to South Korea. In response, Seoul claimed that a confidentiality agreement was in place to protect the soldiers’ identities and circumstances, a claim disputed by Ukrainian officials who deny the existence of such an agreement.

President Lee expressed concern over comments from Ukraine that he believes could escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula by implying a potential military confrontation with North Korea. He emphasized the importance of resolving the issue diplomatically to maintain stability in the region.

Discussions between South Korean and Ukrainian foreign ministry officials have been ongoing in an attempt to defuse the situation. These talks have centered on South Korea’s demand for an apology from Ukraine and the need to prevent further damage to the bilateral relations between the two nations.

Despite the current dispute, South Korea remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, South Korea has provided both humanitarian and financial assistance and has pledged additional non-lethal support to aid in Ukraine’s efforts. Both countries are working towards a resolution that will not hinder their cooperative relationship.
