ChatGPT Teen Version Released by OpenAI with Enhanced Safety Features

Date:

OpenAI has introduced a new version of ChatGPT tailored specifically for teenagers aged 13 to 17, incorporating enhanced safety features and protections suitable for this age group. This teen-focused iteration is designed to limit exposure to content on sensitive topics such as self-harm, suicide, and sexual or romantic discussions, thereby offering a safer digital environment for teens seeking AI assistance with academic tasks, everyday inquiries, or companionship.

The updated version of ChatGPT also includes functionalities aimed at promoting healthier interactions with AI. Parents have the option to connect their accounts and set up quiet hours, during which their teenagers will not be able to access the chatbot. In situations deemed high-risk, parents may receive safety alerts to ensure their child’s well-being. Acknowledging the importance of guidance on sensitive issues, OpenAI is implementing further protections around topics like eating disorders and aims to direct users toward offline resources when necessary.

Efforts to prevent teenagers from forming unhealthy emotional connections with the chatbot are a key component of this version. The AI is programmed to avoid suggesting it has personal feelings, consciousness, or emotions related to the user. OpenAI employs age-assurance technology to estimate whether a user is under 18, based on their interaction patterns. Minors identified through this process can be switched to the teen version, which comes with these additional safeguards.

For educational purposes, ChatGPT for Teens is crafted to foster a deeper understanding of subjects among students, encouraging problem-solving rather than simply providing answers or completing assignments on their behalf. This approach aims to position AI as a supportive study tool rather than a substitute for traditional learning methods.
