This summer’s severe heatwaves have claimed at least 35,000 excess lives across Europe, with expectations that the final toll will rise as additional countries finalize their reports. Germany, France, and Spain have been hit hardest, together accounting for over 25,000 of these deaths. Germany alone has seen around 14,000 heat-related fatalities from April to early August, marking this period as the deadliest summer due to heat since records began. In Spain, nearly 5,000 deaths have been attributed to the heat since May, setting a new record there as well.
France’s preliminary data shows about 7,300 excess deaths between late May and July, though this figure is incomplete as it does not yet include August statistics. Other nations, such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, have also reported significant mortality increases during these extreme heat spells. The relentless heatwaves have driven temperatures above 40°C in many regions of western and central Europe, shattering numerous local and national temperature records.
Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of such extreme heat events to climate change. The challenge in identifying heat-related deaths lies in the fact that extreme temperatures often exacerbate existing health conditions like cardiovascular and respiratory issues, rather than being directly listed as the cause of death. This complexity makes it difficult to accurately assess the true impact of the heatwaves on mortality rates.
As delayed mortality data continues to be processed and August information becomes available, experts anticipate the overall number of heat-related deaths in Europe to rise even further. This alarming death toll underscores the escalating public health risks that come with more frequent and severe heatwaves.
