Romania, Moldova, Ukraine Enhance Defense Ties Over Russian Drone Threats

Date:

In response to an increase in Russian drone incursions, Moldova and Romania are strengthening their defense collaboration with neighboring Ukraine. This includes initiatives to develop domestic drone technology to counter aerial threats. The situation escalated on August 27, when at least five Russian drones entered Moldovan airspace during the country’s National Day celebrations. The event was attended by Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Romanian President Nicusor Dan.

President Sandu condemned the incursions as an intimidation tactic by Russia and expressed concern over the spillover effects of the war in Ukraine on neighboring regions. She stressed the importance of enhanced regional cooperation in light of these repeated airspace violations. Sandu also committed to investing more in defense capabilities and collaborating closely with Moldova’s partners to bolster security measures.

Recent months have seen a surge in Russian drone activity in the airspace of both Moldova and Romania. This uptick in incursions has heightened concerns about regional security and increased calls for more robust air defense systems.

The growing frequency of these violations underscores the tense security situation in Eastern Europe, prompting Moldova and Romania to seek closer ties and coordinated defense strategies with Ukraine. Both countries are focusing on enhancing their technological capacity to effectively respond to aerial threats, amid rising tensions with Russia.
